Oil Seals are used to exclude water, Dirt, Dust or any other substances from a rotating bearing whilst maintaining lubrication.
1. Composition of oil seal
Oil seals usually consist of three main components: springs, metal skeleton and sealing materials. The spring ensures that the sealing lip remains in constant contact with the shaft, while the metal skeleton provides structural rigidity. The sealing material is usually made of rubber or elastomer and forms a sealing lip that prevents fluid leakage.
2. The importance of correct installation
Proper installation of oil seals is critical to their performance. This includes checking the physical condition of the oil seal, applying grease to the inside of the seal, installing the seal with even pressure and perpendicular to the shaft, and checking the flatness of the sealing surface. Special tools are available to ensure proper installation.
